What Is a Creative Block?

For our ear, the more familiar phrase is “a loss of inspiration.” The creative block can be considered as a kind of barrier, restraining us to use the so-called “inner creativity” – the ability to invent something new and use it in practice. Reasons for a Creative Block

  • “I do not know what waits for me.” Fear of failure and fear of uncertainty go side by side. Often, when we are not sure of the success of an idea, we simply “block” it.

Results of a Creative Block

If you have not been able to overcome the creative block for a long time, this condition may turn out to be a little worse: for example, anxiety and depression, especially if you earn for a living by writing. For example, there is a case about the American writer Harper Lee, the author of the novel “Kill a Mockingbird.” It is her single novel. There are many versions of why Lee stopped writing after 1960, when her magnum opus saw the world: it is both inability to withstand a sudden publicity, and, of course, a creative block. In an interview, the writer noted that the work on the second novel was moving very slowly. Of course, we must not forget about her novel “Go Set a Watchman,” which was published in 2015. However, there is one interesting detail – Lee wrote it before “Kill a Mockingbird.”

On the other hand, there have always been writers, who impress with their productivity and do not pay attention to any blocks at all. Stephen King, who produced 54 novels, 6 nonfiction books, and about 200 short stories, has his own method. “I like to write 10 pages a day, which is 2000 words. It is 180,000 words in three months and a good size for a book, in which the reader can happily get lost if the story is good.”

How to Overcome a Creative Block?

If you are not Stephen King and feel that you cannot squeeze out even one page a day, do not despair. To begin with, you can try one of these methods or even successfully compile them.

Method 1: Change your routine

Let us go back to Stephen King. His daily routine is very clear and definite: “When I sit down to write, there is a glass of water or a cup of tea near me. I start at a certain time, in the interval from 8:00 to 8:30 in the morning. I swallow my vitamins, turn on the music, sit down at the same place, my papers are organized in a well-defined order. All these actions tell the brain that it is time to turn on the imagination.”

He talks about the work of his own studio in New York, where he combined two main passions: music and design. He worked on many successful projects but later noticed that he adapted to the routine and all his works became similar to each other. Of course, you do not need to buy a ticket to Asia and move there for a year. Start with a walk, a trip to another city – anything, just not to sit in front of the familiar table and a laptop screen.

Method 2: Go on a trip

This method resonates with the previous one, but now we are talking about a real journey: well, you know, with visas, a long flight, and heavy suitcases. Why is it worth doing so? First of all, a travel allows you to distance yourself from problems and release your creativity to the outside. Whatever one may say, but on weekdays we are more inclined to think about when to pay for an apartment. When we are far from everyday affairs, it is easier for us to design things that are less vital, for example, creative ideas.

Cultural differences are also important. When you get to an environment where people behave differently, speak a new language and are not too similar to you and your compatriots, mental horizons expand and you are able to see that any problem can have several solutions.

Method 3: Stay alone

Loneliness is a powerful catalyst for your creativity. Studies have shown that the most creative adolescents love spending time alone. Even nature has made sure that we can be alone, creating a sleep. Of course, you do not need to throw out gadgets and escape from civilization to islands: it will be enough to have a cup of coffee alone or a leisurely walk in the park. The results of such “tet-a-tet with yourself” can be surprising.
